What does private banking mean?

In Finland there is no definition of private banking in law. It is a marketing name for a package of services that each bank or wealth manager defines for itself. That is why the thresholds, contents and names vary. A typical structure is a lower Premium tier (own contact person, cheaper cards and packages), Private Banking (private banker, wealth management, legal services) and a top Family Office or Wealth Planning tier.

The way the threshold is calculated varies: at some providers it is calculated from the joint assets of the household or family, at some only from the assets held at that bank, at Nordnet as net of debts, and at some the customer relationship can also be obtained with a loan.

Pricing is rarely public. Nordea says that the price of a Private Banking customer relationship is individual, in Ålandsbanken's price list the entry for Private Banking says Contact us for an offer, and according to Evli the costs depend on the amount invested and the investment instruments.

Wealth management and investor protection

In discretionary management the wealth manager makes the investment decisions on your behalf. The Investors' Compensation Fund protects asset management to a limited extent, but not wealth management carried out in an insurance wrapper. Read wealth management and investor protection and compare the banks' prices and services.

Method

On 16 October 2026 we collected the asset thresholds and prices of the private banking, premium and wealth management tiers of banks and asset managers operating in Finland from the providers' own websites and price lists. We did not use news, comparison sites or figures from memory. The asset threshold is the euro amount that the provider itself publishes. Its exact wording (for example "over €500,000 of investable assets" or "typically at least") is recorded in the notes, because some thresholds are firm and some are indicative. If a threshold, a monthly fee or the minimum for discretionary management (täyden valtakirjan varainhoito) is not published, the value is empty (null) and the reason is given ("not published"). The monthly fee is 0 only if the provider says there is no fixed fee. Percentage fees for wealth management are practically never published and are agreed in an offer. In the Säästöpankki and POP Bank groups, services and prices may vary by local bank. Handelsbanken is not included because it is winding down its operations in Finland, and neither is Taaleri, because it no longer offers wealth management to private individuals. Check the current terms with the provider before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do you need for private banking?

In October 2026 the lowest published private banking tier threshold is €200,000 (Oma Säästöpankki OmaVarainhoito). Thresholds of the first private banking tier at the providers that publish one: €200,000: Oma Säästöpankki; €300,000: OP, S-Bank, Evli and Alexandria; €500,000: Nordea, Danske Bank, Aktia, Ålandsbanken and Mandatum. Threshold not published: Säästöpankki and SEB. For a premium tier, €50,000 (Aktia Premium Banking) is enough at the lowest. The threshold is the provider's own, and the way it is calculated varies: some count the family's combined assets, some only the assets held in that bank, and some also grant the client relationship against a loan. See the exact wording under the Terms button.

What is the cheapest private banking?

In October 2026 the cheapest private banking cannot be named, because prices are rarely published. A monthly fee is published for only 7 of 33 tiers: Danske Bank Danske Premium €12.5/month, Aktia Premium Banking €6/month, Ålandsbanken Premium Banking €17/month and Nordnet (no fixed fee). For the other tiers the price is not published or is agreed as a quotation. Nordea says the price of a Private Banking relationship is individual, and Ålandsbanken prices its Private Banking by quotation. Percentage fees for wealth management are practically never published. In Nordnet's service the client keeps the decision-making power, so its price is not the price of a wealth management service. Ask several providers for a quotation and compare the total cost, not just the monthly fee.

What does private banking include?

In October 2026 the most common contents are a personal private banker or wealth manager, discretionary or advisory wealth management, and legal services (inheritance and family law, wealth planning). At the premium tier you usually get a personal contact and cheaper cards and packages, and at the top tier (Family Office or Wealth Planning) a team of specialists for the whole family's assets. The content of an individual tier is on the provider's page and on each row of the tables (Includes column). Finland has no legal definition of private banking, so the content varies by provider.

What is the difference between a premium relationship and private banking?

In October 2026 the premium tier threshold at the providers that publish one is €50,000 - €100,000 (first tier, Nordea, Danske Bank, Aktia and Ålandsbanken), and at some it can also be met with a loan. Private banking starts at €200,000, and at most the threshold of the first tier is €500,000. A premium client typically gets a personal contact and cheaper cards and packages. Private banking has a private banker, wealth management and legal services. The difference is not defined in law: there is no legal definition of private banking in Finland; the term is a marketing name for a service package that each bank or wealth manager defines itself.

Does the Investors' Compensation Fund cover wealth management?

In October 2026 the Investors' Compensation Fund can cover asset management if the service provider is a member of the fund: compensation is 90% of the claim, at most €20,000 per investor and service provider. The protection applies to non-professional investors and does not cover market losses. Compensation covers only client assets that cannot be returned. Wealth management carried out in an insurance wrapper is a unit-linked insurance policy and falls outside the protection, as does investment fund activity. The insurance wrappers are Aktia, Säästöpankki, POP Bank and Mandatum. Read more in the guide Wealth management and investor protection (/en/guides/wealth-management-and-investor-protection).
