Rules of the equity savings account
Deposit limit
- You can invest at most €100,000 in an equity savings account (osakesäästötili), in one go or in several deposits. You can only deposit cash, not shares you already own. (Verohallinto: Osakesäästötili, updated 1 January 2026; authority)
- The deposit limit rose from €50,000 to €100,000 on 1 January 2024. The limit applies to the capital deposited, not to the value of the account; withdrawals reduce the deposited amount. (Verohallinto, syventävä ohje: Osakesäästötilin verotus (VH/6117/00.01.00/2023), issued 1 January 2024; authority)
Taxation
- Returns are taxed only when you withdraw. Taxable part of a withdrawal = return / market value of the account x amount withdrawn; the provider makes a 30% advance tax withholding (ennakonpidätys) on the return, and the information goes to the pre-filled tax return. (Verohallinto: Osakesäästötili, updated 1 January 2026; authority)
- No tax is withheld if the capital income is at most €20. (Verohallinto, syventävä ohje: Osakesäästötilin verotus (VH/6117/00.01.00/2023), issued 1 January 2024; authority)
- A loss can be deducted from capital income only in the year the equity savings account is closed, not at withdrawal. (Verohallinto: Osakesäästötili, updated 1 January 2026; authority)
- In an equity savings account all returns, including dividends from Finnish listed companies, are taxable; in a book-entry account (arvo-osuustili) 15% of dividends from Finnish listed shares would be tax-free. (Verohallinto: Osakesäästötili, updated 1 January 2026; authority)
- Withholding tax deducted from foreign dividends cannot be credited in any situation in the taxation of an equity savings account; the net amount counts as return. (Verohallinto, syventävä ohje: Osakesäästötilin verotus (VH/6117/00.01.00/2023), issued 1 January 2024; authority)
- The capital income tax rate is 30% up to €30,000 and 34% on the part above €30,000. (Verohallinto: Osakesäästötili, updated 1 January 2026; authority)
What can be held in the account
- Shares that are traded on a regulated market or a multilateral trading facility in the EEA (e.g. Nasdaq Helsinki, First North), or on a comparable market outside the EEA, are eligible for an equity savings account, as are share issues that will be listed within a year. ETFs, funds, unlisted shares, bonds and derivatives are not eligible. (Verohallinto, syventävä ohje: Osakesäästötilin verotus (VH/6117/00.01.00/2023), issued 1 January 2024; authority)
- You may not invest from the account in a company if the saver and their close circle own at least one tenth of its shares or voting rights. (Laki osakesäästötilistä 680/2019, published 22 May 2019 (original statute text); law)
- A person can have only one equity savings account at a time; for more than one, the Tax Administration imposes a tax increase, in principle €10 per day for each account. (Verohallinto: Osakesäästötili, updated 1 January 2026; authority)
Changing bank
- You can move the assets of an equity savings account to another provider without selling the shares and without tax consequences. (Verohallinto: Osakesäästötili, updated 1 January 2026; authority)
Who can offer an equity savings account?
The claim that only a Finnish operator can offer an equity savings account is not correct as such. The law also allows foreign EEA operators to offer it, but the account must be at a Finnish deposit bank or at the Finnish branch of a foreign bank.
- A deposit bank, a foreign EEA credit institution, an investment firm and a foreign EEA investment firm have the right to offer an equity savings account agreement (section 3). (Laki osakesäästötilistä 680/2019, published 22 May 2019 (original statute text); law)
- An equity savings account is defined in law as an account at a deposit bank or at the Finnish branch of a foreign credit institution (section 2, item 3). The provider must notify the Financial Supervisory Authority in writing at least one month before starting the service (section 4). (Laki osakesäästötilistä 680/2019, published 22 May 2019 (original statute text); law)
- The Financial Supervisory Authority's interim list (updated 17 May 2021) includes Nordnet Bank AB finsk filial (18 November 2019), Nordea Bank Abp and Danske Bank A/S Finland branch (9 December 2019), Saxo Bank A/S (19 December 2019), Ålandsbanken Abp (16 March 2020) and the OP Group's cooperative banks (12 May 2021). The list is out of date and does not include, for example, providers that started later. (Finanssivalvonta: Osakesäästötilipalvelun tarjoajat, updated 17 May 2021; authority)
In practice the providers of the equity savings account are Finnish banks and the Finnish branches of foreign banks (for example Nordnet and Danske Bank). None of the foreign apps we checked offers an equity savings account: Lightyear, Trading 212, Interactive Brokers, DEGIRO, eToro and Revolut (stocks).
Equity savings account or book-entry account?
The comparison shows the differences between the accounts as they are: taxation, eligible investments, deposit limit and the monthly account fees. Pankkitutka does not recommend either, because suitability depends on what you buy, how often you sell and how you invest.
| Fact | Equity savings account | Book-entry account |
|---|---|---|
| Taxation | Returns are taxed only when you withdraw. Taxable part of a withdrawal = return / market value of the account x amount withdrawn; the provider makes a 30% advance tax withholding (ennakonpidätys) on the return, and the information goes to the pre-filled tax return. | A capital gain is taxed when you sell. | Deposit limit | You can invest at most €100,000 in an equity savings account (osakesäästötili), in one go or in several deposits. You can only deposit cash, not shares you already own. | No limit. |
| Dividends | In an equity savings account all returns, including dividends from Finnish listed companies, are taxable. | In a book-entry account (arvo-osuustili) 15% of dividends from Finnish listed shares would be tax-free |
| Losses | A loss can be deducted from capital income only in the year the equity savings account is closed, not at withdrawal. | A capital loss is deducted first from capital gains of the same year and, from 2016 onwards, also from other capital income in the same year and the five following years. A loss is not deductible if both the acquisition costs and the selling prices total at most €1,000. |
| Deemed acquisition cost | Not used, because taxation is based on the return of the account at the time of withdrawal. | Instead of the actual acquisition cost, you can deduct a deemed acquisition cost from the selling price: 20% if you owned the asset for less than 10 years, and 40% if for at least 10 years. The taxpayer can use the more favourable method. The deemed acquisition cost replaces the actual acquisition cost and expenses; purchase and selling costs are not deducted in addition to the deemed cost. |
| Foreign withholding tax | Withholding tax deducted from foreign dividends cannot be credited in any situation in the taxation of an equity savings account; the net amount counts as return. | Not a rule of this account: see the guide on taxation of foreign brokers. |

Deemed acquisition cost
In a book-entry account you can calculate the capital gain on a sale with the deemed acquisition cost instead of the actual acquisition cost. It is not used in an equity savings account.
- Instead of the actual acquisition cost, you can deduct a deemed acquisition cost from the selling price: 20% if you owned the asset for less than 10 years, and 40% if for at least 10 years. The taxpayer can use the more favourable method. (Verohallinto, syventävä ohje: Arvopaperien luovutusten verotus (VH/6094/00.01.00/2022), issued 20 December 2022; authority)
- The deemed acquisition cost replaces the actual acquisition cost and expenses; purchase and selling costs are not deducted in addition to the deemed cost. (Verohallinto, syventävä ohje: Arvopaperien luovutusten verotus (VH/6094/00.01.00/2022), issued 20 December 2022; authority)
- If the acquisition date and price are missing from the pre-filled tax return, the Tax Administration calculates the gain using the 20% or 40% deemed acquisition cost; stating the year of acquisition is enough to determine the deemed cost. (Verohallinto: Arvopaperien myyntivoitot (täyttöohje), updated 27 September 2023; authority)
