When you buy and sell securities through a foreign remote broker, such as an investment app, the broker usually does not report your sales to the Finnish Tax Administration. In that case you report the sales, gains and losses yourself in your tax return. This guide covers the forms, the difference between a domestic and a foreign broker and the tax rules according to the Tax Administration's guidance.

Deemed acquisition cost

If you have no actual acquisition cost or it is hard to establish, you can calculate the capital gain using the deemed acquisition cost (hankintameno-olettama).

The broker's own reports

Foreign brokers often provide reports to help with reporting, but they do not replace tax advice:

Nominee register and withholding tax on dividends

An account with a foreign broker is usually an investment account where the securities are held in the names of the broker and its custodians (a nominee register, hallintarekisteri).

Compare providers on the investment services page and read investing for beginners. Taxation of an equity savings account is different: the return is taxed on withdrawal and the information goes to the pre-filled tax return, see equity savings account.
