Terminal and card acquiring: how accepting cards works
Accepting card payments needs two things: a payment solution, such as a terminal or an online shop checkout, and an agreement with the recipient of the payment transactions (the acquirer).
"Korttimaksujen vastaanottaminen edellyttää sekä maksuratkaisua - maksupäätettä - että korttitilityssopimusta." (English translation: "Accepting card payments requires both a payment solution - a card terminal - and a card acquiring agreement.") (Nordea, kauppiaspalvelut, retrieved 16 October 2026)
EU law defines an acquirer as a payment service provider that enters into a contract with a payee for accepting and processing card-based payment transactions, which results in a transfer of funds to the payee. Source: Asetus (EU) 2015/751, artikla 2(1) (retrieved 16 October 2026).
A bank does not necessarily handle card acceptance itself. OP directs its business customers to its partners Verifone and Nets, and does not publish its own terminal prices. Nordea's merchant services are provided by Worldline. Nets says it sells the terminal, settlement and maintenance together, which is the provider's own claim.
Several providers sell the device and payment processing through a single account without a separate card acquiring agreement. In that case the money usually comes first to the provider's own account, and the terms for settlement to your own bank account vary. See each provider's settlement in the comparison.
EU interchange fee caps
| Card type | Interchange fee cap |
|---|---|
| Consumer debit cards | 0.20% |
| Consumer credit cards | 0.30% |
The caps have applied since 9 December 2015. The caps do not apply to business card transactions, ATM withdrawals or cards of three-party schemes. This is why many providers charge more for business cards and American Express. Sources: Asetus (EU) 2015/751, artiklat 1, 3, 4, 10 ja 18 (retrieved 16 October 2026); Direktiivi (EU) 2015/2366 (PSD2), artikla 62(4) (retrieved 16 October 2026).
A merchant can decide to accept only some card types, for example only debit cards, but then customers must be told clearly at the entrance and at the checkout. The Payment Services Directive prohibits charging a surcharge for paying by card if the card's interchange fee falls under the regulation.
